This work was created during a pivotal period in René Turrek’s artistic evolution – his so-called phase of self-discovery. In The Lost Art, Turrek processes the theft of several of his artworks during Art Basel Miami – an event that left a lasting mark on his creative journey.
The painting depicts an expressive, urban scene reminiscent of New York’s Times Square – a symbol of the global art market caught between fame, commerce, and the search for identity. In the midst of the vibrant cityscape stands an anonymous artist figure, whose face is replaced by a pink question mark. It symbolizes loss, but also the uncertainty surrounding one’s place in the art world.
The piece unites classical and modern elements: within the “painting inside the painting,” baroque angels appear alongside vivid street-art motifs. This tension between tradition and rebellion runs like a red thread through Turrek’s body of work – an artistic outcry against transience, ownership, and the commercialization of art.
The Lost Art is not only a tribute to the stolen works but also a powerful symbol of rebirth, self-reflection, and the indomitable spirit of the artist René Turrek.
