✔ The Big Five – African animal species

There was a time when hunting big cats and other African species was completely legal and widespread. Especially among the rich. Animal species were hunted for sport and particularly dangerous species were hunted simply for the incentive of having managed to kill such a dangerous animal. For the poachers at the time, there were exactly five of these dangerous animal species in Africa: the lion, the elephant, the leopard, the rhinoceros and the buffalo. These animal species were called the “Big Five”. The intensive hunting of these animal species has meant that most of them are now very much in danger of extinction. Although hunting is partly forbidden today, these animal species are still hunted for sport and money. The “Big Five” have now become a symbol of South Africa and its animal species. They can also be seen on the banknotes of the South African currency: Rand. That's why the South African mint Rand Refinery has also introduced coin series dedicated to the Big Five. This includes this silver coin.

✔ The largest land inhabitant on earth

The motif side of this silver coin, which is limited to just 100 pieces, shows the face of an African elephant. The large ears and tusks are particularly noticeable. The African elephant is often hunted precisely because of its tusks, which serve as defense for the animal. Elephant tusks are made of the valuable material ivory, which is used to make jewelry and everyday objects. African elephants are also feared by poachers because of their tusks. And also due to the fact that the African elephant is the largest land inhabitant on earth. They can grow up to 3.20 meters tall. That's why the African elephant is also one of the Big Five.

✔ The value side of the silver coin

Two halves of the face of an African elephant are embossed on the value side. If you place two coins next to each other, you will have a whole face. The weight of the coin (1 kilogram), its fineness (999) and its face value are also stamped on the value side. The face value is 5 Rand.
